In the summer of 1959 Béla Kreuzer   a gambler   is handcuffed and arrested. He
is placed in detention.  At first,  he believes that he had been arrested because of
something he did at the race course but he soon learns that he was taken into custody
because of his participation in the 1956 revolution. During the police investigation old
friends, even his girlfriend, turn their backs on him.  He is sold out by everyone. The only
person he can trust is his cell mate. The ruthless prosecutor wants to  have him
hanged,  but the detective, who is more of a Svejk ish character, just wants the case off
his hands. The prosecutor demands capital punishment, but the judge opts for a 15-
year sentence.  Béla Kreuzer serves his punishment to the last day. When he
completes his sentence in 1974  the world outside is no longer the same. How does
one fit in? How does one survive? Will he survive as well as those who made peace
with the regime and its new rulers have?
